API Life Cycle Management

Replace WSRR with SOA Software

WSRR Replacement Program

Are you struggling to stay on top of Web services and APIs with IBM WebSphere Service Registry and Repository (WSRR)?  SOA Software’s SOA management tools simplify the management of services and APIs, including those running on DataPower.  Compared to using WSRR, SOA Software helps you handle Web services and APIs in less time, at lower skill levels, and with reduced recurring costs for managing gateway infrastructure.

SOA Software is not locked into a rigid governance framework.  Instead, we apply industry best practices for SOA and API management gained through over a decade of SOA governance experience.

Why Replace WSRR with SOA Software?

IBM customers with WSRR intending to move into API management will find it a struggle. SOA Software can get you there more quickly and with less pain. SOA Software’s products support and promote common unified SOA Governance patterns, and enable the consistent execution of these patterns with the IBM platform. They offer the added benefit that there is no requirement to introduce another non-IBM platform in order to support comprehensive governance.

Avoid a Challenging Migration
If you are on the verge of moving to WebSphere Application Server 8, you will have to update WSRR to version 8.5 if you are using WSRR in runtime. This will be a difficult migration, for many reasons. Now is a good time to assess whether you want to make the investment of time and resources necessary to do both migrations in parallel. It will be far easier to migrate to SOA Software’s SOA and API management tools. You can create a report in WSRR that produces a CSV file with all the information you need to import your services and APIs into Lifecycle Manager. In contrast to WSRR, SOA Software’s runtime management points can be upgraded without downtime.

Simplify DataPower Management
Out of the box, SOA Software’s tools for managing Web services and APIs on DataPower offer a complete life cycle and runtime governance function. As a result, it is possible to create, deploy and manage services on DataPower with less time, cost, and with less high-end administrative skills required to manage gateway infrastructure. With SOA Software, you can actually provision services right onto DataPower, versus first creating a proxy on then configuring it on WSRR V6 and V7. This task typically requires a dedicated DataPower professional.
• Automate DataPower provisioning across multiple gateways.
• Deploy services to DataPower in as little as 15 seconds.
• Define new services for DataPower in minutes vs. hours/days.

Flexible but Complete, End-to-End Lifecycle Management
SOA Software's Lifecycle Manager is the only product that truly handles the lifecycle of a Web service or API from planning through development, production, and retirement. Out of the box, Lifecycle Manager gives you a portfolio view of all Web services and APIs you are managing, including those on DataPower. SOA Software provides out of the box and industry tested lifecycle governance of the service and APIs that reduces the time required to manage services. In addition, this lifecycle governance is customizable if needed. WSRR is not fully integrated with IBM API Management and cannot provide a full portfolio view over all services and APIs in the enterprise. Out of the box, WSRR comes with a complex governance lifecycle which must be configured on day one. SOA Software provides a more flexible, user-oriented tool for the complete end-to-end lifecycle from planning through production and API management with easy configuration:

• Analytics and monitoring of your services and APIs - SOA Software offers in-depth analytics and monitoring of service and API life cycle and health at runtime. In contrast, WSRR has few analytical features built in and no analytics available for services running on DataPower.
• Flexible framework - Unlike WSRR, which requires you and your Project Management Office (PMO) to adapt to a rigid framework, SOA Software’s framework is known for flexibility. It can be adapted to the maturity level of your team and PMO. For WSRR, adapting to any alterations to the framework require significant custom coding.
• User-oriented UI – WSRR’s user interface is based on IBM’s Business Space, which requires custom recoding of the UI for any changes to the underlying WSRR framework.
• Support for multiple libraries - SOA supports multiple libraries and multiple federated instances. WSRR does not support multiple libraries. Multiple libraries are an advantage for organizations that have sub-groups and business divisions.
• Enhanced versioning - SOA Software’s framework will let you version services and APIs on a number of different attributes, e.g. on namespace. WSRR has limited versioning capabilities, based on a potentially chaotic approach where each user can create a distinct version process for each service.
• Engineered for successful governance launch and incremental expansion - SOA Software’s products are known for “moving methodically and taking small bites,” rather than WSRR’s heavily-designed front end that can impede the rollout of a governance plan. Our proven best practices, realized in front end design, enable you begin with your current PMO and then grow from there.
• XML-based Model - The model in SOA Software Lifecycle Manager is all XML, which is easier to manipulate and work with than WSRR’s UML models and class diagrams.

Leader in Application Services Governance Magic Quadrant 2013

SOA Software's API Management solution has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the ‘Leaders’ Quadrant of the 2013 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Application Services Governance. Gartner recently introduced the term application services governance to refer to the union of SOA governance technology functionality and API management, thus preserving the terminology differences between the two, with the view that these aspects will eventually be unified.
